Spotted in Elle, found on eBay

Designer Thomas O'Brien's quirky juxtapositions constantly inspire me.

In his Manhattan apartment, as seen above (from the July/August 2006 issue of Elle Decor), he's placed a Bauhaus lamp by Christian Dell near a new lamp of his own design (Miro for Visual Comfort, $565).

This lamp is also by Dell.

You can find similar lamps on eBay using the keywords "Bauhaus," "Machine Age," and "modernist". If you're a fan of Art Deco, you'll want to add hoody7 and sita587 to your list of favorite sellers.

If it's the glass lamp in the photo that you fancy, you can make something similar using a large blown-glass vessel known as a carboy or demijohn. Below is a beautiful example. I often see these in amber, green, or the palest blues.

At his SoHo storefront and studio, O'Brien sells driftwood lamps, whose rustic charm suits many decors.

This lamp would look great with a crisp, oval shade like the one shown in the shop.

Alas, I think O'Brien's driftwood lamp is irreplacable. That is one sassy lamp. Is there is a magic lampman inside that lamp? It is all: check me out, living room! Can't touch this!

how the heck is anyone supposed to get good deals with ebay anymore? ...thanks a lot for writing articles like this which make it even MORE impossible for normal people to score a good deal on something that they would not normally be able to afford.

How the heck did you find them before???

I haven't found an affordable mid century piece on Ebay in YEARS. I appreciate having them pointed out for those of us who don't have the time to browse. Stop grousing and start bidding.

It's still possible to get an eBay bargain. Just last week, I bought an array of Heath dishes for about $60, far less than you'd pay even at the outlet store. I wrote about the above artists because they post new pieces so often that you're bound to catch one that's going for $100 or less.

HELP!
Hoody7 seems to have disappeared from ebay. He had the most wonderful stuff. Does anyone know what happened to him or how to contact him outside of ebay?
Please help--he was the best.
